The office of the Director of the Provincial Irrigation Department, coming under the Provincial Ministry of Agriculture is to be located in Mankulam. The foundation stone for this office has been laid in Mankulam. Northern Minister of Agriculture, P.Ainkaranesan participated in the event held on Saturday and laid the Foundation stone for the new Office.
43 Million has been allocated for this 2-storey building. The funds for its construction had been jointly provided by the Asian Development Bank and the Sri Lankan Government. The construction of the building is expected to be completed before the end of this year, it is reported. The Provincial Irrigation Department which is now operating from the Building belonging to the KIlinochchi District Irrigation Department, at Kilinochchi, is expected to operate from its own new building from next year.
In a context where several people are insisting that the Mankulam should be converted into the Administrative capital of the Northern Province and the Secretariat of the NPC should operate from Mankulam, the Provincial Irrigation Departis moving to Mankulam as a precursor.
