The Convener of, National Movement, for the release of, Political Prisoners, Rev. Fr. M.Sakthyvel said that, the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and the Attorney General’s Department jointly killed Ananthasuthkaran’s wife and drove their children into the road.
A discussion under the title of ” Towards the release of Political Prisoners, wholesome legal policy stance” was held at the Arts Faculty Hall of University of Jaffna yesterday, under the aegis of Centre for Research on Identity and Policy. Rev. Fr. M.Sakthyvel said so addressing the gathering at this discussion.
Speaking further he said, the PTA is itself in a terror. They are making us into terrorists using this Act. When we took self defence acts against this Act, they arrest us using this Act.
Nobody is arrested for crimes they have committed. The charges are made after arresting people. The main evidence in these cases, “the Confessions” are extracted through torture. In some cases no signature is obtained from the confessor, but they are forged.
The AG’s Department made 199 charges on Ananthasuthakaran, who had been sentenced to life. When his case commenced the AG Department withdrew 104 charges. If they are withdrawing like this, on what basis they made the charges? It is the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and the Attorney General’s Department who jointly killed Ananthasuthkaran’s wife and made their children into orphans.
There is no humanitarianism in this Act. A wife was expecting the return of her husband. After the judgment was delivered on the negative side, she got sick and died. This is cold blooded murder.
A person in Vavuniya was sentenced to 2 years in prison. At the tail end of the prison term, a new case was filed on him. While the case was dragged on, he also died. This is also is a murder committed by the PTA and the AG’s Department.
Southern political prisoners are politicized and released. But Tamils are not released like that.
Former presidents Late Premadasa and Mahindha Rajapakse are alleged to have given trillions of rupees to the Tigers. If what they did is politics, how could what we have done will become terrorism?
It is not the 108 political prisoners that the Government in trying to punish. It is the intent of this government to punish the politics of the Tamil people. Asking for General Amnesty or Rehabilitation is like punishing ourselves. Hence we should not ask for General Amnesty. Rehabilitation is not needed to the political prisoners. It is the Tamil Politicians who should be rehabilitated. It is them who ask for General Amnesty. They could not be Tamils. They should be excluded from Tamil politics, he said.
