Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has stated that said only President Sirisena could nominate an individual for the post of Attorney General. The approval of the nomination would be sought from the Constitutional Council thereafter.
He was responding to the statement made by Dinesh Gunawardena over the delay in appointing the Attorney General. Ranil added that he would consult the opinion of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) concerning a suitable person for the post.
“What is wrong with seeking the advice of the BASL? The BASL fought for the independence of the judiciary. The government will be seeking its advice. I personally will speak with the BASL and pass on their advice to President Siriena.” Ranil posed.
