Re-planting of  trees essential in de-forested areas, insist Mulaitheevu Public Organizations

Environmental problems are found increased in Mulaitheevu District due to the uncontrolled deforestation for excavation of sand and gravel.

Large extents of forest has been destroyed for excavation of sand and gravel and these areas being transformed into areas unsuitable for human habitation. These activities are being undertaken without permits from Mulaitheevu District Secretariat but with permits from districts like Anuradhapura.

The public organizations of the District have demanded that re-planting should be undertaken where large extent of forest had been destroyed. However no action had been taken to re-planting trees as demanded.

In areas such as Kokkavil in Odduchuddan Divisional Secretary area, Amathy puram Village in Thunukkai DS Area, several villages in Mantha East, Iruddumadu, Visuvamadu and Udaiyarkaddu in Puthukudiyiruppu DS area, and Kumulamunai in Karaithuraipattu DS Area, large extents of forests are being destroyed for large scale illegal sand and gravel mining is carried out.

In this context, the Public Organizations had demanded that the Mulaitheevu District Secretariat should take action to stop these illegal activities and undertake re-planting activities in areas where forest had been destroyed.
