The TNA has firmly insisted with the Government that before holding any election, the Referendum on the New Constitution should be held.
In a context where the anticipation for the elections East, North West and Sabragamuwa Provinces have risen, the TNA has firmly reiterated the matter with the government.
It is believed that if the elections for 3 PCs are held now, it will affect the efforts for drafting the new constitution. Political observers point out that if the Provincial council elections are held now and if Local Government elections follow them, then the drafting efforts of the New Constitution will be pushed back further.
After a long time of back dragging, the Interim Report on the drafting of the New Constitution is to be tabled in the Parliament on next Thursday. An election at this juncture will disturb everything the TNA thinks. Hence it has insisted with the Government that, it should not hold any election before holding a Referendum on the New Constitution.
The New Constitution may be affected by any election. therefore, we have reiterated with the Government several times that, the Referendum on the New Constitution must be held before holding any election. Before holding Any election, whether for Provincial Council or Local Government, the Referendum on the New Constitution should be held. We have now made the Government aware of our stance, said the TNA spokesman, M.A.Sumanthiran.
