The farmers in Mandaikallaru had requested that their agricultural lands be protected from saline-water penetration by building a dam for Mandaikallaru river. The farmers pointed out that because of this dam had not been built, sea waters that floods Mandaikallaru during high tide periods flows through Mudakkanaru to invade Vannerikulam and Aanaivilunthan, increasing their salinity.
The bridge over Mandaikallaru is being built at a cost of 400 Million Rupees. But the farmers accuse that no action had been taken to build the dam with doors to prevent rain waters going out to sea and sea water from coming in. As this dam had not been built, salinity had already claimed areas like Vannerikulam, Kunchchukulam and Anaivilunthan and currently affecting Akkarayankulam areas.
Particularly, drinking water wells in Skanthapuram and Maniankulam areas under Akkarayankulam are being transforming into saline water wells. Agricultural lands being affected and harvests are being affected as a consequence, they said.
