Resettlement tasks dragging on for want of adequate funds. DS in quandary with only 20% funds released

Although the Jaffna District was allocated 3,150 Million last year by the Ministry of Resettlement, only 197 Million has been released so far this year. Hence the resettlement tasks are delayed, it is reported.

Houses have to be constructed in the areas released by the Army in 2017 and 2018, apart from this large lengths of roads have to repaired immediately. Clearing lands overgrown with jungles have to be cleared repair of drinking water wells, toilet facilities, livelihood and temporary settlements and construction of infra structure etc. need several thousand Million rupees of money in Jaffna District.

Part of these tasks were completed last year. The release of 683 acre recently had increased the work load. The reason for this is that more funds were allocated in 2017, less amount, less than 20% to be exact, had been allocated this year. This has caused delay in works to be undertaken in Vali North.

However the District Secretariat circles said attempt is being made receive funds through other Ministries and the Members of Parliament.
