When the monthly meeting of the Point Pedro Pradeshiya Sabah was held on 16.09.2019, presided by A.S. Ariyakumar, a resolution was adopted to get the residential and lands with tourist potential acquired by Department of Wild Life through gazette notification and to declare them as Reservation with tourist potential.
The Department had acquired these lands through the Special Govt. Gazette No:1995-13 dated 2015.03.01, without obtaining permission from or without consulting the Point Pedro Pradeshiya Sabah.
This Nagarkovil Forest Reservation consists of lands and houses of the people, three Grama Niladhari Divisions, temples, lakes and fresh water fishing areas. Further these are the society lands of the people of the area.
The lands which had been declared forest reserves, without proper research or evaluation, will have a detrimental impact on the livelihoods and life styles of the area people.
Large sized sand dunes, rare mangroves not found in any other area of Sri Lanka, Animal habitats, habitats of migratory birds lagoons and rare plants are found here.
It had been decided in the meeting that action will be taken to get these reservation released from the Department and declare it a tourist reservation.
