Rise in price of Seed- Onions: Maha Season Onion cultivation in danger, farmers express concern.

The price of the seed onions for Onion cultivation in the Maha Season in Jaffna District has increased by Rs.20,000/= per 50 kgs. In this context, the farmers have expressed concern that,  it will be difficult for them to engage in Maha Season onion cultivation.

Usually during Maha Season, Onion cultivation will be undertaken on an extensive extent. Red Onions and Vethala Onions are normally cultivated. These varieties will be harvested, stored and at the end of the Dormant period, they will be used as seed-onions.

During the Yala Season this year, cultivation of onions was affected by drastic drought and weather aberrations onions were not stored as seed-onions. The price of the seed-onion had gone up by Rs.20,000/= per fifty kilos and not available in needed quantities, said the farmers.

The Jaffna variety of onion is sold at Rs.400/= to 500/= per kilo.

In a crisis situation where adequate quantities of seed onions are not available, is causing unexpected impacts on traditional onion cultivation and the farmers are being subjected to much inquietude, it is reported.
