Saiva Siddhanta (Hindu Philosophy)

Saiva Siddhanta (Hindu Philosophy)

Hinduism has many philosophical system. Saiva Siddhanta as an authentic school of Philosophy and spiritual tradition is borne out by a large number of saints it has produced throughout the centuries. It has been a living tradition in its homeland.

The basic Tamil sources for Saiva Siddhanta are twelve devotional works known as Panniru Thirumurai and fourteen doctrinal works known as Siddhanta (or meykanda) Sastiram.

Saivism is the oldest religion in the world. It was not founded by any particular person, nor its origin be dated as the case with other religions. It is the most ancient living religion in the world. Saiva Siddhanta is the most pragmatic of all philosophies.

Saiva Siddhanta has been viewed by some of the western scholars among them Mr.M.R.Horisington (New Haven USA, 1854) stated that “ the method of reasoning contemplated by the author (Sri Meikanda Thevar) and by the Hindu dialoticians generally, is fully illustrated in the following treaties, Siva gnana Potham and in one still longer, Siva –Prakasam (of Unmapati Siva caryar). In these Treatises they have presented to us, by the Authors their own system of doctrines drawn out in logical form, taken in connection, these treatises cover nearly the whole Hindu Philosophy. Thus they present to us distinctly the various phases of Hindu speculative doctrine, which are important to be known, but which western oriental scholars have not yet been able to fully develop from the more brief or fragmentary treatises in Sanskrit, hitherto brought to light.

Rev.Dr.G.U.Pope stated in the translation of Thiruvacakam of Manickavacakar (Clarendion, Oxford 1900) that : It is the choicest produced of the Dravidian intellect. The Saiva Siddhanta  is the most elaborate, influential and undoubtedly the most intrinsically valuable of all religions of India. Dr.L.D.Barnett wrote in the Heart of India Series, London, 1909 that “No cult in the world has produced a richer devotional literature or one more instinct with brilliancy of imagination , fervour of feeling and grace of expression.

Sir John Marshal (London 1931) stated that ‘Among the many revelations that Mohenjadaro and Harappa had in store for us none perhaps is more remarkable than this discovery that Saivaism has a history going back to the chalcolithic or perhaps even further still and that it thus takes place as the most ancient living faith in the world.

The artistic symbol and focus of Saiva Siddhanta is displaying the eternal dance of SIVA, represents the dynamics and How of life through the  fivefold divine functions of God: Creation, protection, obscuration, destruction and redemption through his Grace. It also portrays the unique, underlying unity of the worlds of man, mind and matter, pulsating in unison with the source of cosmic energy which is God himself.

“Shiva’s dance is an image of the energy which science must postulate behind all phenomena. Its significance is three fold. First, it is the image of his rhythmic play as the source of all movement within the cosmos, which is represented by the arch. It is called as ‘Ohm’ has several. Now Scientist has found universe has seven vibrations in its lifespan. The philosophy of multiverse is also like seven pitches and the music. Secondly the purpose of his dance is to release the countless souls of men from the snare of illusion. Thirdly the place of the Dance, Chidambaram, the centre of the Universe is within the heart”. It is the place where Big Crunch will occur.

All the movements within the cosmos are his dance without him. No one manas. He dances quite gently. If he dances vehemently the whole earth will sink down at one. He dances with his eyes closed, because the sparks from his eye will consume the entire universe. The image of his rhythmic play is understood as the source of all cosmic motion. Action and Tension. The purpose of his dance is to release the innumerable souls of mankind from snore of illusion.

Amongst the greatest of the Names of Shiva is Nataraja. Lord of Dancers or King of Actors. The cosmos is His theatre, there are many different steps in his repertory. He himself is actor and audience.

When the Actor beaten the drum. Everybody cometh to see the show: when the Actor collect the stage properties. He abidth alone in his happiness.

It is not strange that the figure of Nataraja has commanded the adoration of so many generations. past: familiar with all skepticism, expert in training all beliefs to primitive superstitions, explorers of the infinitely great and infinitely small, we are worshippers of Nataraja still.

We can observe that the Hindu Philosophy is merging with modern Physics as String Theory and Theory of Everything E 8 model.

String Theory has been the preeminent model for physics beyond the Standard Model. Indeed, String Theory is often touted among physicists as the ultimate Theory of Everything. The basic premise of String Theory is that the most fundamental building blocks of the Universe are not atoms, or even elementary particles like electrons, muons and quarks, but rather exotic string-like objects living in a    26-dimensional space. The great appeal of String Theory to modern physicists is two-fold. First of all, it very deftly circumvents two theoretical obstructions that had long thwarted the unification of Einstein’s theory of General Relativity with the quantum field theory of elementary particle physics (viz., the lack of renormalizability and the occurrence of quantization anomalies) . The second is its apparent uniqueness: once one adopts the basic principles of string theory, it can be argued that we live in the universe we live in because it is the only one that is possible.

Actually this uniqueness is not quite complete; there are in fact several competing string models. But the dominant model by far is that of heterotic string theory, and it is there that E8 plays an essential role.

The three fundamental categories or entities called the tripadarthas (pati, pasu, pasam) or the ontological status of God, Soul and the world.

Hindu Philosophy as different ontological status as God, Soul and bond can be explained by modern physics with matter particles and its annihilations in the universe. Whenever a particle collides with its antiparticle; it can annihilate away in to pure energy. Dance of Siva explained in closed eyes of the Lord, which is preventing universal annihilation.

All three are real and co-eval but their ontological status is different.

  1. God is Sat and Sit (Existence and knowledge)
  2. Soul is satasat and Sitasit
  3. Bonds are asat and asit

The Soul wakes up from its slumber state of kevola to the half awoke state of Sakala and eventually to the purified state of suddha avastha. It is through its very association with Maya that the Soul can ultimately be freed from its bondage.

The Nature of the supreme Lord/God explained as

“தன்னிலைமை மன்னுயிர்கள் சாரத்தருஞ்சக்தி
பின்னமிலான் எங்கள் பிரான்”
(திருவருட்பயன் பதிமுதுநிலை 2)

Our lord is inseparable from his Sakti (Energy) in order that souls which are eternal may attain his stats (may become like unless him) all the same Lord is one and Indivisible and being in a string model. (பின்னம்இல் ஆன்).

Lord is formless. He has form to wise. He has a form of wisdom.

“அருவும் உருவும் அறிஞர்க்கறிவாம்
உருவம் உடையான் உளன்” (திருவருட்பயன் பதிமுதுநிலை 5)
