Sathurukondan Masscre that shook Baticaloa

The people of Sathurukondan, Pannichchaiyadi, Pillaiyrady and Kokkuvil villages of Batticaloa District were driven Sathurukondan Army on 09.09.1990 at 5.30 p.m. They never came back home. They were massacred by the Army at Sathurukondan Army Camp.

47 children including 5 children with special needs,85 women and 28 aged people were included in the massacred lot. Those who cannot walk were taken in Army lorries. The people were separated into men, women and children. They were hacked to death by swords, stabbed by knives or shot dead by guns. Later their corpses were burned with tyres. However, one person was thrown little too far of their intended mass grave and escaped by crawling into a nearby bush and was later rescued by the American Mission priest and was admitted to the Hospital. Information was passed by this man and when the Red Cross and Human Rights officials went and inquired about the incident, the OIC out rightly denied any such incident.

Captain Gamini Warnakulasooriya, Herath,and Wijenayake were Identified as the perpetrators of the horrendous crime, along with the Officer Commanding, Colonel Percy Fernando and although necessary evidences and identifications were provide, no inquiries were held on these officers and they are roaming even now as free men.
