Sea Erosion in the South Seas: Mannar Island in danger

The South Bar beach is being eroded on a massive scale, by excessive winds and waves. The Southern beaches from South Bar to Keeri, which come under Mannar South Bar Grama Niladhari division, are being eroded heavily by the excessively high winds and large sea waves which are prevailing for months now.

Because of this erosion, a danger of the small Sea or “vattuk kadal”, under the Mannar Bridge being linked, to the ocean. This will cause the sea water to invade residential areas and the dangers in massive scale will be caused to all of Mannar Island. Particularly confluence linking siru kadal and the Ocean also had been subjected to much erosion. The chance of the sea water invading residential areas had been increased by this also.

Usually, for some time from May, some amount of erosion does happen. But this time the erosion is much more than the usual. People had requested the Officials to take precautionary methods to stop the sea water invading the villages or alternate activities to completely eliminate sea erosion.
