In an interview during his visit to the US recently, the Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister Justice CV Wigneswaran talked about everything from his entrance into politics to the current situation in the Northern Province.
“Secretively some of the Sinhalese leaders are telling us we will grant you this , we will grant you that and so on. And, they expect us to accept their word. But, it has been our experience that subsequently they will say what can we do, we would like to give you, but our people are against this and so and so forth” he said in an interview with S.A.N Rajkumar for ‘The Conversation’ programme.
Wigneswaran explained the historical discrimination that the Eelam Tamils have had to encounter after the independence from Britain.
“We were majority who were joined up with the rest of the island and we were made into a minority. We were entitled to certain special administrative, political institutions to look after ourselves, but that was not done. There had been a definite pattern with regard to the dominating spirit of the majoritarian community by which our community suffered” he said.
“Transparency and accountability are absolutely necessary if we are going to take up politics in a sensible way. Secret pacts and doing things behind everybody’s back that doesn’t take us anywhere”. He said highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability.
