Security fences moved back at Nanthikadal following inquiry by HRC, Vavuniya

Following actions undertaken by the HRC, Vavuniya, Security fences put up by Army hadsbeen moved back to facilitate small scale Fishermen to engage in fishing in Nanthikadal.

Earlier, small Scale Fishermen of the Nanthikadal area has made a complaint with the Human Rights Commission, Vavuniya regarding their livelihood being prevented by Army putting up security fences along the shores of Nanthikadal.

Following this complaint, the Commission had a discussion with the the Officer Commanding of the Gotabhaya naval Base and the  Army camp on the other side  of Nanthykadal. On the commission pointing out the difficulties undergone by the fishermen, the Security forces promised to move back the fences and provide whatever facilities they could to the Fishermen.

Accordingly, fences have been moved back to facilitate fishermen engage in fishing.
