Sinhala imposed on Minorities in Amparai, Complaints made to President and Ranil

Although Tamil people are are living in majority, in the Amparai District, the Tamil people and officers are greatly inconvenienced because the District Secretariat is sending all letters only in Sinhala Language, the National Muslim Council has pointed out.

They have indicated this in letters sent to the President and Prime Minister. The Government had confirmed that the Administrative language of Eastern Province is Tamil. However the Amparai District Secretariat is imposing Sinhala in disregard to the government’s confirmation.

The Ministry of Public Administration had instructed that if any Government establishment has to send a  Sinhala letter to a Tamil medium Government office, it should be sent with a Tamil translation and if a letter is received in Tamil, the reply should be sent in Tamil. But it is notable that the Ampara District Secretariat is acting in total contravention to the Ministry order.

There are 13 Tamil Divisional Secretariats found in areas inhabited by Tamil people who constitute 65% and  7 Sinhala  Divisional Secretariats found in areas inhabited by Sinhala people who constitute 35% .

It is regrettable that no solution has been found even in the period of the new government. We request that action should be taken to solve this long standing problem, they had said.
