The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is seriously considering the appointment of Former Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management, Nimal Siripala de Silva as the Opposition Leader in Parliament.
Former Minister of Health, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena claimed that a majority of the SLFP Parliamentarians were in favour of his appointment. The final decision is to be made soon after the Pope’s visit concludes, it was known.
Former Minister of Mass Media and Information, Keheliya Rambukwella also vouched for the choice. However, he went on to say that there were other options also being considered by the Central Committee.
“John Seneviratne is being considered for the post due to his seniority, and there is also an idea to bring back former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to Parliament where he would assume the role of Opposition Leader. All options are being weighed by the Central Committee, and a final decision will be made in the next few days”, Rambukwella said.
Rambukwella also claimed that the final decision would likely be that of Nimal Siripala de Silva to assume duties as Opposition Leader.
