Smoke came from the buried war time  shell

A shell used during the war period was recovered when excavations were made to find out the source of a smoke which rose while a small tank in Manianthottam, Jaffna was renovated.

The shell was recovered during two-days of excavations for renovating the tank.

The Ammankulam in the Maniankulam, 1st cross street is being renovated by the Nallur Divisional Secretariat  in conjunction with the area people. During the above renovations, on 18th , smoke had suddenly emerged from the floor of the Tank , following which the Secretariat Officials had suspended excavations.

Thereafter the police and the STF had been informed and the STF undertook a search with the permission of the court for two days here. A shell used during war period was recovered in deteriorated state. Some friction during the excavation had ignited the explosive inside the shell  causing the smoke. Although further searches were undertaken by the STF yesterday, Friday no further UXOs were recovered.
