A special project is to be undertaken soon to harvest, ripen and sell mangoes in Jaffna. As a step stage, a special Zone is to be set up in Uduvil, it was announced in the Agricultural Coordinating Committee meeting held at the District Secretariat yesterday.
The Post Harvest Research Centre Officer, Somakanthan elaborated further saying that, this project is to be introduced to create better marketing opportunities in the peninsula and producing fruits without artificial ripeners.
If quality mangoes are ripened without affecting the mangoes, they could be preserved for a long time. This project is to be commenced such that, special processes are followed in each of the stages such as plucking mangoes from the trees, ripening, transporting and Storing.
By doing this mangoes could be maintained in their natural appearance till they are consumed.
The milky substance oozing from mangoes as soon as they are plucked spoil the appearance of the mangoes. Special containers will be used to prevent the milky substance spreading, special storage while ripening and special plastic containers for transport after ripening.
This method was introduced in Kurunagalle with success and is to be extended to Jaffna as a second step. This method now introduced only for mangoes is expected to be extended to Papaya and Plantains. Quality fruits could be supplied to local Market and exported abroad, he said.
