Sri Lanka likely to re-implement death penalty

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Friday said that he would re-implement the death penalty from next year if parliament gives consent.

Speaking at the national Drugs and Alcohol Temperance programme held in the southern town of Galle, Sirisena said that the decision to introduce the death penalty was taken following several incidents of rape reported in the island nation and the recent brutal murder of a five-year-old girl.

“I am in a position to impose the death penalty using the executive powers vested in me. But, I thought that the better option was to discuss it with Parliament before introducing the death penalty,” the president said.
