Statue in memory of Navarathnasamy, the Palk straights swimmer

A statue of Murugupillai Navaratnasamy , the first man to swim across Palk Straight, in 1954, which was erected at Thondaimnaru in memory of his swim was opened by the  Divisional Secretary, Point Pedro, E.Jeyaseelan last Wednesday.

It is notable that late Navarathnasamy was honoured by queen for his feat.

His younger son Late N.Balachchandran was also an accomplished swimmer who can swim with both his hands and his legs tied together with ropes.
