District Director of Agriculture Lalithakumary Printhaswaran stated that a request had been made to release the paddy stores at Palk Road, Vavuniya, which is under the control of the STF.
Answering a question of a media person she said, Paddy purchasing activities are being undertaken in Vavuniya District, to purchase the Yala season Paddy. The harvest is higher this time as several tanks were renovated in the past. Anticipatory Plans were drawn to purchase 34,657 MT of paddy this time.
2MT of paddy is being purchased from each farmer and on this basis the District Secretariat and the Divisional secretariat are jointly organizing storage facilities to store the paddy. Particularly, stores had been built in Omanthai, Vepankulam, Mamadu, Nedunkerny, areas in Vavuniya. Only 5,000 MT of paddy could be stored in them now.
A situation is now prevailing where the balance paddy could not be stored anywhere. The Paddy store at Vavuniya Palk Road is currently under the control of the STF.If that store is released 3,000 MT of paddy could be stored there. During the last Maha season, we requested in writing to release this store. But no reply was given. We have sent a letter to the STF to release the store and our office there, said she.
