Strong opposition to granting land to Army within Jaffna Fort

The Secretary of the Tamil National People front, S.Kajendran  has announced that a protest rally will be held  on behalf of TNPF to protest against  granting land within the Jaffna Fort to the Army, tomorrow Sunday at   2 p.m.

In a DDC meeting held on May 28th presided by the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe,  the   Army proposed that if land is granted to them within Jaffna Fort, several small army camps in Jaffna could be removed.  Protests were expressed in the meeting itself that, as  Fort is an Archaeological Monument, construction of any other buildings inside it cannot be permitted.

It is a law that no construction could be undertaken within 400 meters of any Archaeological monuments.

However in contravention of this law, Jaffna Police Station was constructed in close proximity to the Fort. Duraiyappah stadium was renovated. Hence,  Historical Researchers and enthusiasts are strongly opposing the granting of land to Army within the Fort.

The Jaffna District Secretariat circles said no lands have been granted to the Army so far within the Fort. However, some media have published news that land has been granted to the Army. Tomorrow’s rally has been seemed to organized based on the these news published by the media.
