Tamil Doctor’s Great achievement, in Leg transplantation at Anuradhapura Hospital
In the history of Sri Lanka, the first ever leg transplantation has been performed by a medical team headed by a Tamil Doctor, Joyal Arudchelvam and including Doctors, Amila Ratnayake , Ruwan Wijeyasinghe and Wevan Kariyawasagam..
This surgery was performed at the Anuradhapura last Monday.
The team headed by Dr. Arudchelvam, a specialist in vein and transplantation surgery, has removed the leg from a Brain- Dead person and successfully transplanted it to a youth who was receiving treatment at the same hospital.
This youth (aged 32) , who had lost a leg in an accident one year ago was transplanted with a leg of a 52 year old, whose brain had died. The families of both the youth and the brain dead had consented for this transplant.
For this type of surgery to successful the blood groups tone of the skin and other physical features should tally, said Dr. Arudchelvam. He also said the transplanted leg has started work well.
It is notable that less than 10 surgeries like this are performed in the whole world so far.
