Teenage weddings and ‘living together’ families are on the increase it is reported. Court Action will be taken on all teenage couples to eradicate this menace, said the Jaffna District Police.
Jaffna District Social Protection Committee’s meeting was held at the Jaffna Police Station yesterday, presided by the Senior Police Superintendent, Jaffna.
All the Child protection officers, Child rehabilitation Officers, Family welfare officers and Women Development Officers of all Divisional Secretariats of the Jaffna District participated in this meeting.
Several matters relevant to women and children protection were expressed in this meeting. It was also pointed out in this meeting that the ‘Living together’ by girls under 16 years and boys under18 years are on the increase. This is illegal. Further, this also leads to domestic violence.
There are complaints in Jaffna District regarding the ‘Living together’ by girls under 16 years and boys under 18 years. Police is taking action to control this.
Police assured that Court action will be taken against Teenage weddings and ‘living together’ families, even if the parents consent for the marriage is given.
