25 fishermen were arrested at Thalvupadu, Mannar by the accusing them of engaging in banned fishing Method. Tension was created when the relatives of the arrested fishermen protested in front of the Navy Camp. Navy had arrested the fishermen when they went for fishing as usual, it is reported.
The relatives bowed that they will move away only if the arrested fishermen are released and the matter was informed to the Department of Fisheries and Aqua Resources and the Mannar Police. The police discussed the matter with the people and then took over the 25 fishermen arrested by the Navy and took them to the Mannar Police. Thereafter people dispersed from the location.
The Police said that the fishermen will be produced at the Mannar Court. We are using “Surukku Valai” for more than 30 years. In other parts of Mannar banned fishing methods are still being used. Why Navy is engaging in arresting activities only in our village, asked the Thalvupadu village people asked. The Navy is continuously harassing us to revenge us. Earlier also incidents like this had occurred, they said.
