“Thamizh Amutham” event was held in an invigorating spirit at the University of Jaffna yesterday under the aegis of the University Students’ Union.
A grand cultural Procession commenced in front of Sivan Amman Temple, located at Thirunelvely on Palaly Road, at around 8.15 a.m. The Traditional performing arts of Tamil People including, “Kavadiyaddam”, “Silampaddam”and “ Horse Dance” were performed in the procession.
When the Cultural Procession reached the University Premises, the Statue of, Sir. Ponnampalam Ramanathan located within the premises was garlanded by the Former VC of University of Jaffna,Prof. E.Wigneswaran.
The day’s events commenced then, on a massive stage erected for the purpose, presided by the the President of the Student’s Union, N.Thivaharan. During the event vocal- instrumental- drama events heralding the Traditional Arts and culture of the Tamils were given importance and performed on the stage. The students of the University participated in the events with much enthusiasm.
Large number of people including The governor of the Northern Province , Mrs. P.S.M. Charles, The competent Authority of University of Jaffna, Prof. N.Kanthasamy, Jaffna District MP, Mawai Senathyrasa, TNPF secretary, S.Kajenthiran, Jaffna Mayor, E.Arnold, Members of the Jaffna Municipal Council, Swamy Sithahasanantha of the Sinmaya Mission, Students of all faculties of the University, students from Eastern University and Tamil enthusiasts participated in the inaugural event of “Thamizhamutham”.
