More than190,000 persons  affected by drought in the North – Disaster Management Centre

The Disaster Management Centre announced yesterday that 190,244 people have been affected by the prolonging drought.

While, around 21,000 families in Jaffna District , 18,000 families in Mannar district have been affected by the Drought, 152,000 persons belonging to around 36,000 families in the East have been affected. More people have been affected in the Batticaloa District in the East.

As the water level in the Elephant Pass  Lagoon has gone down more than 100 families in the Village of Thaduwankoddy have lost their livelihood.

113 families in Muruththanai Village in Valaichenai Pradeshiya Sabha are finding it difficult to get drinking water. All 4 wells in this village have dried up and people have been reduced to using water from nearby Kalapuwa. 250 acre paddy cultivated in Mavadduvan Kanndam have been fully destroyed by the prevailing drought.
