Activities have been undertaken to clean and clear the Tharavai Maveerar Thuyilumillam, which is considered to be the largest in the Eastern Province.
The Shramadhana work of the Tharavai Maveerar Thuyilumillam which comes under Batticaloa, Kiran Divisional Office area, was commenced yesterday. It was announced that the current works are aimed at renovating the Tharavai Maveerar Thuyilumillam to its old glory in the periods before the final war.
Tharavai Pradeshiya Development Society and the Democratic Militants Party have joined hands in this work. The Tharavai Maveerar Thuyilumillam which comes under the Batticaloa /Kiran Divisional Secretariat went into disuse following the end of the war in 2009, mainly due to the stringent attitude of the security forces towards memorials of fallen Maveerars people did not dare to visit them or commemorate the Maveerars there.
It is notable that during the war period the Army had broken up the sacred resting places of the Maveerar and thrown the debris into a small pond nearby. A large Army camp was established in front of the Tharavai Maveerar Thuyilumillam and to date hundreds of soldiers are stationed there.
