The inauguration events of the 200th College day celebrations of the Jaffna Central College, the first college to be established in the Northern Province, commenced yesterday, Saturday (01.08.2015), under the hegemony of the Principal of the College Mr. S.K.Ezhilventhan. At the outset, a special worship was held at the Jaffna Methodist Church.
Following the worship, events moved to Romaine Cook Hall, of the college. An old boy and an Olympian Dr.Nagalingam Edirveerasingam participated as the Chief Guest. The statue of the founder and a former principal, Rev. James Lynch was garlanded by Dr.N.Edirveerasingam.
Founder’s day oration was delivered by retired Librarian, K.Manivasagar. Several people participated in this event including the Deputy Principal, Vice Principals, students, Teachers, parents, members of the School Development Society, and old boys.
The 200th year celebrations are planned to be held for one year from today, 1st to August, 2016, said the Principal of the College, Mr. S.K.Ezhilventhan. It is notable that, special events are to be held every month.
This National school, named as Jaffna Central College is one of the oldest colleges of Sri Lanka. This college was founded in 1816. It was known as Jaffna Wesleyan English School. Later 1825 was moved to the location Vembadi Girls’ college is situated now. Its name was changed to Jaffna Central School by Rev. Peter Percival of the Wesleyan Mission.
Jaffna Central College has the pride of introducing Football, Cricket, Scouts Movement and Commerce Education to Northern Province.
