The Fishermen societies of Thenmaradchchi have complained to the Fisheries Minister that their livelihood is being affected by transgressing fishermen.
Fishermen from Jaffna and other areas coming in more powerful boats are engaging in catching fish and prawns in the seas off Thenmaradchchi, they said. While this is affecting the livelihood of the Thenmaradchchi fishermen, they do not possess high powered boats to stop the transgressing fishermen. Because of this the transgressors escape very easily. If we try to stop them there are possibilities of them ramming our boats with their strong and powerful boats and escaping. They are destroying the marine resources of this area. Good variety fish are not being caught after the war. As the number of fishermen have increased, we are unable to undertake fishing properly, they said.
