Thiruketheeswaram Incident made Catholics to lower their heads in shame, Vicar General of Jaffna Diocese strongly condemns

The news published in media regarding the breaking up of the Sivarathri Arch on the road to the historically ancient  and holy  Temple of the Hindu brethren at Thiruketheeswaram, by Catholic people directed by a Catholic priest caused much sorrow and deep shock  to us. As Catholics we lower our heads in shame and we strongly condemn the act,  said the Vicar General of the Jaffna Diocese, Rev. P.J.Jebaratnam.

We express our deep sorrow to the Hindu brethren whose hearts had been injured by this incident during the Sivarathri period. This act could not be justified in any way. In the current context, it is essential that, we the Tamils grow in brotherhood without any religious prejudices, and relevant persons should repent and perform appropriate atonement, he had said.

Several Hindu and other organizations had condemned the incident and the Mannar Court had issued an order that the destroyed Arc be re-constructed  within 4 days.
