The Government says the threat faced by Sri Lanka if the opposition wins the upcoming Presidential election is very much real.
External Affairs Minister Professor G.L Peiris said that the joint opposition only wants to see incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa defeated.
The Minister told reporters at a media briefing that there are clear differences in the policies of the political parties in the joint opposition.
He said that while there is a difference in the policies of the main opposition UNP and the venerable Athurelia Rathana thero, there are also differences in the policies of former President Chandrika Kumaratunga and former Minister Champika Ranawake.
He also said that one of the main threats faced by Sri Lanka is an attempt to divide the country based on race, which could lead the country to disaster.
