TNA condoles death of Kodeeswaran who fought a lone battle against the Sinhala only Act
We express our deep condolence for Chellaiah Kodeeswaran who went up to Privy Council fighting a case that the Official Language Act, enacted in 1956 and the Treasury Circular issued under it in 1961 are contravening the section 29(2) of the Solbury Constitution, the TNA had announced.
After long term illness he breathed his last on the 15thy of this month. Kodeeswaran’s case had earned a unique place in the Legal history of Sri Lanka.
Kodeeswara who was the President of the State clerical Union was refused his increment on his refusal to get proficient in Sinhala Language. The case filed against this refusal in the Jaffna District Court went up to Privy Council and he was victorious at the Privy Council.
However as a Republican Constitution replaced Solbury Constitution in 1972, he couldn’t get the final order in his case.
We express our respectful condolence to Kodeeswaran, who fought against the ‘Sinhala Only’ Act which was detrimental to Tamil People, a press release of the TNA, issued by M.A.Sumanthiran said.
