Tamil National Alliance Leader R.Sampanthan has observed that his party welcomes the appointment of a civilian as governor for North in place of the earlier governor who had a military background. This is a progressive measure.
Speaking to the media, he recalled that the previous regime of Rajapakse failed to appoint a civilian governor in response to TNA’s request despite its promise. He also stated that at the last meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena, TNA raised the issue of non-civilian governors serving in the north and east.
He added that President Sirisena has responded to their request promptly. He hoped that the same procedure too will be followed in respect of the governor of the Eastern province, for he too has a military background.
