4 women from Delft, belonging to the same family were tragically killed when the car they travelling crashed into the train travelling from Jaffna to Matara. Two more were injured. However the driver escaped unhurt.
This accident had occurred when the car tried to go across an unguarded railway crossing, the Police said.
The tragedy had occurred at Omanthai, Panrikeithakulam at around 10.30 a.m. The car had moved from A9 into Panrikkeithkulam through Temple Road, when the accident occurred.
Of the 8 whowere travelling in the car 4 were killed on the spot, two were seriously injured while the driver and a small boy escaped by jumping off the car. The police are engaged in further inquiries.
Isaignanawathy Yogaratnam (Aged 56) Of Delft West, her younger daughter Kamalanathan Sivaranjani, (Aged 30) who was living in Sweden, her eldest daughter, Kandeepan Jamunaranjani (Aged 32) and her daughter Kandeepan Dishalini (Aged 13) lost their lives at the spot.
James Kamalanathan (Aged 34) and his daughter Kamalanathan Jesikka(Aged 6) both residents of Sweden were seriously injured.
The driver of the car, Muthaiya Reddiyar (Aged 53) was arrested by the police following the accident.
It is notable that in the last year also, a father and his son travelling on a motor cycle lost their lives in a similar incident.
