Two undergraduates shot dead by police in Jaffna, 5 policemen arrested, Tension prevailing

Two undergraduates of the University of Jaffna, were shot dead while travelling on a motor Cycle in Kokkuvil area, in Jaffna day before yesterday night at around 11.30 p.m. Tension is prevailing in Jaffna area and the University students are boiling with anger over the meaningless killing of their comrades by the Jaffna police.

3rd year students of the Arts Faculty of the University of Jaffna, Vijayakumar Suluxan (aged 24) of Kantharodai, Chunnakam and Nadarajah Kajan (aged 23) of Iranaimadhu, Kilinochchi are the undergraduates killed in this incident.

Tension is prevailing increased after the students siege the Mortuary of Jaffna hospital, demanding justice for the killing of their co-under graduate.

5 police personnel including, one Sub-Inspector, one Sergeant, two constables and a police driver who were on duty in the said area were arrested immediately after the incident  and the case has been handed over to the Colombo CID, on orders from the DIG, Jaffna. It is reported that the arrested officers will be produced in the Jaffna Courts.

The two students were returning after dinner in Jaffna towards Chunnakam through KKS road and it was reported they were shot at Kulapiddy at around 11.40. A bullet has gone through the chest of Suluxan, and other student had died due to being crashed against a wall and light post after Suluxan died by the shooting.

Blood stains were found nearly 50 meters away from the spot of the accident and the motor cycle was found in a suspicious position it is reported. Residents in the vicinity said the a police team who came to the spot was vigorously searching for something, presumed to be the empties of the bullets fired in the incident.

Jaffna MC Judge, S. Satheeskaran, JMO of Jaffna Hospital, U.Mayuran, DIG, Sangeeva Tharmarathna had visited the spot. The parents have identified their respective sons. The Judge instructed the students not to engage in any violence and order that bodies be released to the parents and that bodies be buried instead of cremating.

The political parties have severe condemned the shooting. They have insisted that the perpetrators of this cold blooded murder be arrested immediately and punished.

Jaffna Police station was in an alert stage with riot squads and water cannons in position.
