The United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion of Belief, Ahmed Shaheed has come on a visit to the North to study about the religious Reconciliation after the Easter Sunday terrorist Attack. He came to Vavuniya yesterday and met the foreign refugees housed at the Poonthottam Welfare centre.
After the attack on Easter Sunday, several foreign refugees, including those from Pakistan and Afghan, who have been housed in Negombo were transferred to Poonthottam welfare Centre. Following part of the refugees opted to return to Negombo the other refugees were continued to be housed at Poonthottam.
After inspecting the refugees he found out from them regarding their current situation, situation after the terrorist attack and their current problems. This meeting was extended to around one hour.
Prior to this meeting, he met the Vavuniya District Religious Reconciliation Group at the Vavuniya Kurumankadu RDA building and discussed with them regarding the Religious Reconciliation after the terrorist attack and the current situation of Religious Reconciliation.
It is notable that the media was allowed at these two meeting and the Special Rapporteur refused to comment on the meetings.
