University Students’ Federation announces legal action against police

The Inter University Students’ Federation has today announced that it is taking legal action against the police  which fired tear gas and water towards hundreds of students protesting near the University Grants Commission (UGC) at Ward Place yesterday.

Convener of the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) Lahiru Weerasekara says that they will take legal action against the police for assaulting the demonstrators.

He says that the police had reacted in an inhumane manner.

However, refuting the allegations that were levelled against the police,  Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said that the police were acting in their capacity.

Meanwhile, the 39 students who were arrested on Thursday are due to be produced before the Colombo Chief  Magistrate on Friday.

Six police officers were admitted to hospital after sustaining injuries following action taken by police to stop the protest.

The Students Collective to protect the Higher National Diploma in Accountancy commenced their protest march from Colombo Fort demanding an equal recognition as provided to the Bachelor of Commerce.
