Valvettuthurai Urban Council run by Tamil National Alliance was dissolved following a directive by Northern Province Chief Minister C.V.Wigneswaran on the basis of a report submitted by former District Judge M. Arumainayagam, Northern Province Chief Minister’s office sources indicate.
Although the Tamil National Alliance gained majority seats in the Valvetithurai Urban Council following the last elections and Anantharaj was appointed Chairman, Urban Council was unable to function smoothly due to conflicts among members and there were also allegations of corruption in the administration.
In that background, the budget proposals presented by the Chairman were defeated. Chief Minister appointed a one man Commission to inquire into the allegations. Former District Judge was appointed Commissioner.
His findings were handed over to the Chief Minister a few weeks ago. It is reported that it was on the basis of that report that the Chief Minister Wigneswaran took the decision to dissolve the Council. As the Urban Council is dissolved, it will be administered by the Secretary till the next election.
