Vidya’s Gang rape cum Murder case to be tried in Jaffna

The Attorney General has requested the Chief Justice to hold the trial of the Vidya Sivaloganathan’s Gang rape cum Murder case in Jaffna.

Pungudutheevu School Girl, Vidya Sivaloganathan was abducted on her way to school, two years ago and was subjected to monstrous Gang rape and was murdered. 12 suspects were arrested by the CID. The case against these 12 suspects was concluded after 2 years of trial at the Kayts Court and the case report was submitted to the Attorney General. releasing the 12th suspect from the case and converting the 11th a prosecution witness, the Attorney General had sent back the case documents to Jaffna High court.

However a uncertain situation that arose as to whether the trial will be held in Jaffna or Colombo, Jaffna HC Judge Ilancheliyan placed the documents under lock and key.

In this context it has been announced now that Attorney General has requested the Chief Justice to order that case be conducted in Jaffna. He has also requested the Chief Justice to nominate three Tamil judges to hear the case.

The AG’s Department also said that the decision whether to conduct the case in Jaffna or Colombo will be announced within a week.
