We felt like setting our foot on the moon: says a residents of Iranaitheevu who visited their lands

Our residents in Iranaitheevu have been destroyed. Our cattle has multiplied and roaming the areas. When we set foot on Iranaitheevu we were submerged in a feeling similar to what was felt by Amstrong on the Moon. The people who went to Iranaitheevu said as above.

Iranaimatha Nagar is located at a small distance from Nachchikudah in Kilinochchi. Iranaitheevu is located in sea around 7 Kms. from Iranaimatha nagar. it is in extent of around 1,000 acre.167 families which inhabited Iranaitheevu was displaced en-masse in 1992. They are now living scattered in several places including Kilinochchi. To date they are unable to settle down in their ancestral lands.

The 167 families held demonstrations in front of the Navy head quarters at Mulankavil. A team of 14 officers were taken to Iranaitheevu for the purpose of Identifying the lands of the people so that they could be resettled.

We were earlier living in big concrete houses. our houses are now heaps of stone. Except for the small area occupied by the Navy all others are overgrown with jungle. After much labour, lands of only 40 people could be identified. Around 700 – 900 cattle are found roaming.  These are only assets there. If we are given our lands and assets we will build our lives, they said.

Although the official wanted stay there and proceed with the identification work the officer in charge there said that he is not authorized for that and that Navy Commander should be contacted.
