The NFF leader MP Wimal Weerawansa who was arrested by the CID this morning has later been released on bail by the Magistrate of Negombo this afternoon.
The magistrate ordered to release the MP on a 10 thousand rupee cash bail and another two personal bails amounting to one million rupees each.
MP Weerawansa was arrested on charges of possessing two passports.
Immigration Officials sent back MP Weerawansa after he attempted to leave the county on an invalid passport early this morning.
A few hours later, MP Weerawansa arrived at the airport again to leave for Dubai on another passport.
After the incident was reported to the CID, detectives started questioning the MP and he was arrested later.
A police Media Spokesman stated that the MP was arrested on the charges of keeping a misplaced passport in his possession and, providing false information to the Immigration and Emigration Controller to obtain a new passport.
This was also raised in parliament today by MEP leader and MP Dinesh Gunawardana.
Leader of the House and minister Lakshman Kiriella, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya also involved in the argument.
Later leader of the house and minister Lakshman Kiriella made awareness in the house about the incident.
However when MP Weerawansa was produced before the Negombo Court, Magistrate Thilakarathna Bandara ordered the MP to surrender the two passports in his possession to the CID.
The case was fixed to be heard again on October 28th. (Hiru News)
