TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran has accused TNPF Leader Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam of having appeared with President’s Council Daya Perera for the Army, in a case in which the Army was accused of massacring Tamil civilians in Mylanthanai.
Leading Human Rights Lawyer, Mr. Ratnavel had stated that the accusation placed by Mr. Sumanthiran against Mr. Gajendrakumar is a blatant lie (Audio recording of his interview is given below).
Mr. Ratnavel represented the victims in the above mentioned case. As someone who was involved in the proceedings of the case from the beginning till the end, he has said that Mr. Gajendrakumar did not appear in this case on behalf of anybody at any stage.
“As the lawyer who appeared for the affected Tamil people at every hearing date, I was aware of details of all the Attorneys-at-Law who appeared for the accused. On that basis, I can definitely say that Mr. Gajendrakumar did not appear for the accused at any time in this case,” he said.
Mr Ratnavel further pointed out that this case was concluded in 2002, and that Mr. Gajendrakumar did not practice as Attorney-at-Law after he was elected as a Member of Parliament in 2001. Mr. Ratnavel added that the accusation placed on Mr. Gajendrakumar was a blatant lie and that he was prepared to appear before any court to prove it.
It is notable that Mr. Ratnavel has bravely raised his voice continuously in releasing Tamil youth arrested under the notorious Prevention of Terrorism Act and Emergency Laws being used by the Sri Lankan state against the Tamil people.
The claim that Mr. Sumanthiran had lied about Mr Gajendrakumar surfaces only two days after Prof. Cheran had refuted an advertisement published in a Tamil newspaper in Sri Lanka with the names of certain members of the Tamil Diaspora proclaiming support for Mr. Sumanthiran in the upcoming parliamentary elections, saying his (Prof. Cheran’s) name and photograph was added to the advertisement without his consent.
