Dean of the Colombo Law Faculty, Mr. V.T. Tamilmaran has expressed his concern over the way he has been vilified with regard to the incidents that took place in Punguduthivu in the last few days.
“What the people have witnessed is a long planned drama aimed at ruining my public life, the political recognition I had amongst the Tamil people and the respect I had earned as a Law Academic and to bring everything to zero within just a day” he said in a media statement issued today.
His full statement is as follows:
In this statement I wish to put forward some of my views to the people, with great responsibility trying as much as possible to not inconvenience any issue that is under investigation and/or before the courts.
What the people have witnessed is a long planned drama aimed at ruining my public life, the political recognition I had amongst the Tamil people and the respect I had earned as a Law Academic and to bring everything to zero within just a day.
Being unexperienced and completely caught unawares by what happened the attempts I have to make to get out of this test of truth have not been easy, whatever was my strength was targeted in a deliberate poisonous attempt that not just the ordinary people even the well informed people were taken aback in surprise.
The innocent public have been brought into this and pulled down by goons who were unaware of my 35 years of experience in Law, Human Rights, and Women’s Rights teaching that I have been engaged in both in the domestic and international fora. That is what has affected me most. Even after all these years of service I still live in a rented house earning a monthly salary, but, those who know me well know that leave alone Rs. 40 lakhs not even 40 crores would make me barter my political integrity, and it is for this reason fearing for their political survival that some have made this attempt on my life and my integrity, which is much more dearer to me than my life.
Three different groups with their own self interests in mind but with different political colorations have joined together on the day of the incident and acted in such a way, this has now become more evident and enough to realize whether there is any truth in the false accusations made against me. The people who led the protests and the locations where the protests were held instead of showing intense anger at Vithiya’s rape and death seemed to focus more on tarnishing my reputation.
I am not a criminal lawyer. I am a full time University employee. Therefore, I don’t appear in Courts. If I am to practice in Courts I need to get special permission to do so. The only reasonable thing I could do was to contact the relevant authorities including the Attorney General and ask them to bring the real criminals behind this horrendous act of rape and murder of a young school going girl to book.
If you cannot deal with a person’s view it has now become common to attack his personal life. Informed persons would know that if you attempt to gain victory through such attacks on a person’s personal life then it is difficult for any person anywhere to survive such attacks.
I do not have a response to how a suspected criminal (someone whom I have never set eyes on till that day) who was handed over to the Jaffna Police Station before my very eyes by two Police Officers could have escaped. The Police would be the proper authority to respond to this. I understand that the same suspect was on the previous day, tied to a tree and assaulted by some members of the public but had escaped. Who released him or took him back to Pungudutivu is not known. One does not need rocket science to understand who was behind this act. I would like to acknowledge the responsible behavior of some of the media with regard to this matter.
I am heartened by the continuing messages of support that I am receiving from those who love their hometown and are acting according to their conscience. The truth about what really happened has now started emerging. I am certain that that what I have learnt and taught these years will never go to waste.
