Wijekala Maheswaran sworn in as State Minister for Education
Jaffna District MP, Wijekala Maheswaran was sworn in as the Non-Cabinet Minister for Education. This appointment was granted to her while the swearing in of State Ministers of the United National Front Government, held yesterday at the Presidential Secretariat.
She took her oaths before the President Maithripala Sirisena.
Her public statement that the hands of the Liberation Tigers should be strengthened in North created an uproar in the South. As result of this the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe announced in Parliament that the UNF is pursuing action against her. CID filed a case against Wijekala Maheswaran in the Colombo Magistrate Court. She was arrested in this case and later released on bail.
In this context , Wijeyakala Maheswaran who was holding the State Minister for Women and Children’s Affairs, resigned her post over the controversy.
