Wild Life Department Officials fish in Maruthankerny/ Eluvaikulam, blocking livelihoods of 120 families

The Wild Life department has claimed ownership of Eluvaikulam in Maruthankerny Divisional Secretary area in Vadamaradchchi and preventing 120 from undertaking their routine livelihood in the Kulam.

This Fresh water fishing Kulam is located in Kaddaikadu of Mulliyan GN Division. Fishing in this fresh water kulam in extent of about 25 acres was the traditional area which provided livelihood for 120 families.

However, these fishermen say that for last two months the officials of Wild Life Department are preventing them from fishing , but, the officers are undertaking fishing in the Kulam.

When contacted over this, Maruthankerny Divisional Secretary said that the fishing in this kulam is found to be the long term livelihood of these fishermen and the Wild Life Department is preventing them from doing so.

However, he said that there are provisions in the Sri Lanka Biological and Zoological Act for the people to undertake fishing in this Tank and a solution shall be found for this problem with the assistance of the District Secretary.
