In view of the renovation work currently in progress and in order to speed it up, the farmers of the area had fully consented to abandon Yala cultivation in 2016.The matter was taken up for discussion with the farmers by the Kilinochch District Secretary, Suntharam Arumainayagam., yesterday.
As 24 ft of water will be drained off for renovation work, water will be not enough for Yala cultivation. This meeting was convened after The Asian Development had instructed that the consent of the farmers should be obtained and the farmers here insisted the project should be completed within stipulated time , farmers should be informed of the progress and if any farmer is affected by any unexpected change in weather the be compensated. They also insisted that the department officials should ensure the quality of the work done having in view the water seepage that occurred at Kanakambihai kulam which was recently renovated at high cost.
