Yala cultivation did not yield expected profits, says Kilinochchi farmers

Kilinochchi farmers said that they were unable to get expected profits in the Yala Cultivation. Excessively hot climate, diseases that afflicted the paddy plants and the heavy rains experienced during the harvesting period were the main causes for this loss of profit.

Altogether 17,000 acre lands were cultivated in areas including Iranaimadu, Kalmadu, Akkarayan, Vanneri and there were sufficient water levels in the Tanks.

Another cause is that the PMB which pledged to purchase the paddy could not keep it for shortage of storing facilities and finances. This made the farmers to sell their produce at low prices to private vendors.
