Youth arrested in 2011, tortured to death by Police: Mallakam Magistrate orders police report

Suspicion had been raised that a youth, who was arrested on a theft charge was tortured to death. Witnesses said yesterday in Mallakam court the they saw the dead youth being electrocuted and assaulted by the then OIC of the Chunnakam Police. The Mallakam Magistrate had ordered the IGP to investigate this allegation and submit a report within 3 months and to arrest the suspect.

some youths were arrested on 2011.11.21st while Mahindha was in power. The youths who were gifting exercise books to students were arrested suspected of celebrating Maveerar day.But later they were charged with theft.there case came up yesterday. 4 suspects appeared in court. Kantharasa Sumanan who was arrested with the suspects was found dead on the following day in Iranaimadu reservoir. Th suspects said that after severe torture Sumanan was taken away in a police jeep and they came to know that he had been found dead.

The suspects brought to the notice of the court though their attorney that they saw the then OIC of Chunnakam Police station and now OIC of Kodikamam Police, Shinthika Bandara and some other police officers electrocuting and torturing Sumanan by inserting nails in his legs. They also said that they were also tortured by inserting nails in their legs.

Following the magistrate being informed that the OIC, Shinthika and other police officers were responsible for Sumanan’s death, he ordered the DIG to investigate the incident and submit a report within 3 months and to produce the suspects in court.
