A youth was shot yesterday in Uthayapuram , Manianthottam, Ariyalai east area by unidentified persons yesterday, in broad day light. Seriously injured he was admitted to Jaffna Teaching Hospital, and despite being treated in the ICU for 7 hours he succumbed to his injuries at around 9.15 p.m.
The said incident had caused much tension in the area, and security had been tightened there, massing police and STF personnel.
The victim, Don Bosco Rickman (aged 24) is a fisherman by profession and he had gone out from with a friend. Two people on a Motorcycle on the Uthayapuram Cross road had come from ahead and had shot Rickman with a pistol and had escaped from the scene. His friend, with the help of the others admitted him at the JTH, where he had succumbed to his injuries. The bullets had entered Rickman’s body near left shoulder and existed through the chest area.
The relatives who think that this is the work of the police operatives, say he had no enemies and that a police sleuth had gone up and down several times recently and he was also found near spot of the incident, for more than once. The said sleuth had been brought by an ordinary person. Inquire him. There is no likelihood of Private persons carrying guns here. Only Police personnel are allowed to carry side arms and this incident could not have happened without Police knowing it, argued the relatives with the police.
Meanwhile, some people have come in a 3-wheeler and removed the empty cases before public came to the spot. The friend who took Rickman had been subjected to inquiries, and he had said that he don’t know the assailant but he could identify him.
